What is Edge Clearance
Edge clearance is the minimum distance between any components and the edge of the PCB. It ensures the proper positioning of components within the board for reliable operation. It prevents potential issues that may arise from components being too close to the edge of the PCB.
When components are placed too close to the edge, it can impact the functionality of the board and potentially cause damage. This is because the edge of the PCB is more susceptible to mechanical stress, environmental factors, and handling during manufacturing and assembly processes.
Having an appropriate edge clearance ensures that all components on the PCB are properly located and have enough space to function optimally. It allows for proper clearance between components and the edge, reducing the risk of short circuits, electrical interference, and mechanical damage.
However, not all components require the same edge clearance. Some components may need to be placed closer to the edge of the circuit board to operate successfully, especially system interfaces like connectors and switches that need to be manually accessible while also touching both connecting cables.
