What is FR-406

FR-406 is a type of PCB material offered by Isola, a company specializing in the PCB industry. It is an epoxy-based resin system that provides enhanced thermal characteristics compared to standard FR4 materials. FR-406 has a thermal conductivity of 0.4 [W/m*K], indicating its ability to efficiently conduct heat. It also has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 170°C, which means it can maintain its mechanical structure better at higher temperatures.

In addition, FR-406 has a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 60 [ppm/C], measuring its expansion or contraction with temperature changes. This property is crucial for ensuring the stability and reliability of PCBs in different environmental conditions. Furthermore, FR-406 exhibits a dielectric constant (Dk) of 4 and a dissipation factor (Df) of 0.013, which are important parameters for determining the electrical performance of the PCB material.

The higher Tg of FR-406 allows it to withstand elevated temperatures without losing its solid form, making it suitable for applications that require superior thermal performance. It is worth noting that short exposure to higher temperatures, such as during reflow processes, is generally acceptable as long as it is not repeatedly exposed to these higher temperatures.
